Soffit, eaves and overhangs are susceptible to water damage caused by ice, improper flashing, ripped shingles, and faulty gutters. Once water has penetrated, the rot spreads quickly because it stays soggy inside the damp, dark space. A proper soffit deters heat build-up and moisture accumulation.
Damage can also be caused by birds and squirrels nesting. These animals have been known to burrow through a perfectly good eave, but they are especially attracted to water damaged areas, which offers much less resistance.
Wasps, hornet and bees also can build nests in and under eaves.
